It’s officially “summer” according to the calendar, but it feels like we’ve been enjoying the summer for months now! The breeze is warm, the days are long, the lake is swim-able. Truth be told, if I had my choice, I would have planned a summer wedding. I’ve always romanticized about an outdoor ceremony under a big weeping willow tree, where everyone is escorted into a lovely patio at sunset for cocktail hour with champagne and strawberries. Colourful bouquets with peonies, light chiffon bridesmaid dresses and a flower garland in my hair.
Too perfect, right? Well being a wedding photographer has it’s advantages, and disadvantages. I’m booked solid this summer, so I knew that a summer wedding for us wouldn’t be an option. But there are a lot of advantages to having an off-season wedding too, and I knew we could probably get more bag for our buck if we planned ours for November. Still, our busy season is now well underway, and we’re attending so many LOVELY summer weddings and it has me totally remembering why I love summer so much. Truth be told, if I could choose one climate to live in year round, it would be summer-like all day every day. There’s something so magical about the summer months, I think because we have some serious weather in the winter, it makes us appreciate the warm weather that much more. I also find summer to be very nostalgic. The scents of summer take me right back to my childhood and “coming of age” years. When the summer months seemed to last forever and I was too young to go off on my own, but felt too old to be babysat…when it felt like something AMAZING was about to happen at every turn. When summers were full of sleep-overs, camping, concerts and swimming in the backyard pool for hours. When I first started noticing boys, and just couldn’t WAIT to be old enough to go out to dances, and go on dates. BBQs, bonfires, carnivals, fireflies, picnics and visits to the beach still make me the most happy. I’ve had fun these past couple of years experiencing these things with the man I love, and I can’t wait to start a family and enjoy the summer months through my child’s eyes all over again.
Oh, and for the record – I may not be getting married with a flower garland in my hair, but I still managed to wear one briefly after a styled photo-shoot with my incredibly talented mother. I love flower crowns:
